Do Something Great!
great works that glorify God
Part 1 – Do Something Great!
“The people that do know their God shall be strong, and do exploits [heroic deeds]” —Daniel 11:32
It’s a God-Given Desire!
“He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do…” —John 14:12
What would your answer be if you were asked, “Do you have a desire to do something great in your lifetime?” Most people would say, “Yes!” The desire to do something great is an inborn response to the fact that you were created by a great and eternal God.
God has infinite purposes for everything He created—including you! He designed you to be eternal, and therefore the things you do should have an eternal purpose.
Look at the Heroes of Faith
Throughout history, God has called and empowered ordinary men and women to do great works that glorify Him.
God placed within Joseph a desire to do something great in the eyes of his family. Moses had a longing to do something great for his nation. God sent Esther to the kingdom of Persia “for such a time as this,” bringing the plight of her people before the king. Paul lived out a God-given passion to reach the Gentile world with the Gospel.
Hudson Taylor longed to reach the millions of China. George Mueller wanted to demonstrate how God could meet all needs through prayer. William Borden had a burning desire to reach the people of China. John Knox cried out, “Give me Scotland, or I die!”
Do Something Great—For Whom?
Our natural inclination is to want to do something great for ourselves. We mistakenly believe that greatness is all about us. We think that it is based on personal achievement, which will result in fame, fortune, and position. So we try to choose a vocation that we think is the most honorable and prestigious. With this we try to fulfill our innate desire to do something great.
But God warns: “Seekest thou great things for thyself? seek them not” (Jeremiah 45:5). Christ put greatness into proper perspective when He said to His disciples, “Whosoever of you will be the chiefest, shall be servant of all” (Mark 10:44).
